The Audit Committee: A key link in the financial reporting and audit process

A one day conference presented by the Audit Oversight Commission in cooperation with the World Bank Centre for Financial Reporting Reform

The audit committee plays an important role in ensuring listed companies provide the timely, reliable financial information for investors that is crucial to the efficient operation of Poland's capital markets. The Audit Oversight Commission of Poland, in cooperation with the World Bank's Centre for Financial Reporting Reform, is presenting this conference hosted by the Warsaw Stock Exchange to promote greater awareness and understanding of the audit committee's role and responsibilities in the financial reporting process. The conference will offer to audit committee members practical insights from a Polish and an international perspective on how they can fulfill their role more effectively. It will also provide an opportunity for them to discuss with their peers the challenges facing audit committees and how they can contribute to improving audit quality and safeguarding shareholders' interests.

The conference is directed primarily at members of audit committees and supervisory boards. It is also relevant to statutory auditors and senior executives who work with audit committees. Keynote address – What makes an effective audit committee - Lessons from practice

Mr Stephen Haddrill – Chief Executive, UK Financial Reporting Council (invited)
The speaker will discuss the audit committee's role and responsibilities in relation to financial reporting and share his practical experience of meeting the challenges of implementing an effective audit committee. The speaker will address matters such as:
  • selection of appropriately qualified members;
  • definition of a mandate;
  •  information management;
  • relationships with the key players in the audit process;
  • what to look for from the CFO and his/her team to improve understanding of operations and current business issues;
  •  how to maximize the value of business understanding in discussions with the CFO, the external auditor and the internal auditor;
  •  frequency of communication and dealing with different personalities.
