President's Message
As I begin my term as IFAC president, and we move into 2011, I have been reflecting on how much the world changed during my term as deputy president--and indeed, how much it continues to change.
The financial and sovereign debt crises consumed much of our attention and energy over the past two years. And we saw how seemingly isolated incidents--within companies and within countries--can spread and intensify to affect larger populations. In this environment, the financial and business information that the accountancy profession provides has become much more important for sound decision making and risk management.
We saw at the World Congress how vibrant our profession is--how well-represented, strong, thoughtful and smart. We also heard repeatedly that we must ask ourselves the tough questions about the profession's contribution to financial and non-financial reporting in a more sustainable world, as well as questions about the value of the audit. In order to move forward as a profession, I believe we need to do just that. We must demonstrate that we are part of a global solution that contributes to financial stability and economic growth.
Let me give you just a few examples of what I mean...
